Girl Scouts of Western Ohio (GSWO) announced today that it received a $7,500 grant from the Best Buy Foundation for cybersecurity programming for Dayton Girl Scouts. This grant will be used to support the Cyber Warrior Princess Weekend for Dayton and Cincinnati Girl Scouts. This event is a partnership between GSWO, the nonprofit organization Cyber Warrior Princess, and funding partners such as Best Buy.

“One of Best Buy's guiding behaviors is ‘Think About Tomorrow’ and Girl Scouts’ Cyber Warrior Princess Weekend is an outstanding example of what Best Buy is trying to accomplish,” said Ruben Ortiz, manager of Best Buy #274 in Dayton. “We are excited to fund and partner with an organization that can inspire and engage these girls in the computer science and information technology field, while simultaneously challenging them to understand what is possible. This program was hand selected because it combines learning and career exploration while upholding values that are essential for today’s teens.”

The goal of GSWO’s cybersecurity programming and events such as Cyber Warrior Princess Weekend is to expose girls to STEM education and careers, including in-demand information technology fields such as cybersecurity. Across the world, women remain underrepresented in STEM careers, including information technology. In the United States, women only represent 11 percent of the cybersecurity workforce. GSWO is working to increase the number of women in cybersecurity careers by engaging girls in hands-on cybersecurity activities and mentoring from information technology professionals.

“We are grateful to Best Buy for investing in Girl Scouts,” said Roni Luckenbill, CEO of Girl Scouts of Western Ohio. "Thanks to this grant, local Girl Scouts will have the opportunity to explore cybersecurity and information technology careers at Cyber Warrior Princess Weekend. This would not be possible without Best Buy’s generosity and partnership!”
