Every year, Girl Scouts explore the natural wonders found across our country during the Girl Scouts Love State Parks weekend. On September 11 and 12, 2021, Girl Scouts celebrated our shared love for the outdoors with our local state parks.

Girl Scouts of Western Ohio and the Ohio Department of Natural Resources hosted events on September 11 and 12 at three Ohio State Parks in our council!

STAND UP PADDLEBOARDING

SAT, SEPT 11 | 9 - 10 AM OR 11 AM - 12 PM | CSA | NATURE CENTER

Check out East Harbor State Park and try your hand at stand up paddleboarding! Learn to stand on your board that’s floating on the water while using a paddle to propel yourself through the water! Equipment and instruction provided.

Note: Girls must be at least 50 inches tall to participate in paddle boarding. Meet at the East Harbor Nature Center.


SHE'S A FORCE OF NATURE

SAT, SEPT 11 | 9 AM | ALL AGES | AMPITHEATER BEHIND NATURE CENTER

Learn from amazing women working in state parks around us. What does she do and how did she get here? You will want to hear these inspiring stories from Ohio State Park’s female trailblazers who have broken barriers for women in conservation.


FISHING

SAT, SEPT 11 | 1 - 2 PM | ALL AGES | LOCATION TBA

Have fun fishing with friends! Never fished before? No problem. A professional from ODNR’s Division of Wildlife will teach fishing tips and techniques that often lead to a fun, lifelong hobby. You will be “hooked!” All equipment will be provided.

Note: Girls 15 and over must have an Ohio Fishing License.

BEE PROGRAM

SAT, SEPT 11 | 12 PM | ALL AGES | NATURE CENTER

Bees are essential to the healthy functioning of natural ecosystems, agricultural lands, and your own yard or garden. Learn what all the buzz is about!


FLY FISHING

SAT, SEPT 11 | 3 PM | BEGINNERS | NATURE CENTER

Learn the basics of fly fishing at Indian Lake State Park and see how easy it is to get started!


ARCHERY

SAT, SEPT 11 | 10:30 AM, 1:30 PM, AND 4:30 PM | BROWNIES AND OLDER | ARCHERY RANGE, MOUND WOOD AREA

Grab up those bows and learn the basics of archery shooting. Challenge yourself to hit that target! All equipment is provided. The archery range is located near the recycling station at the Moundwood Boat ramp area of Indian Lake.

3 | Cowan Lake State Park | Wilmington, OH
SAILING KAYAKS

SAT, SEPT 11 | 10 AM - 12 PM | AGE 12 AND OLDER | PUBLIC BEACH, YANKEE ROAD

Come to Cowen Lake State Park and experience sailing a kayak! Jump in and let the wind take you on an adventure. This is perfect for all beginners. All equipment is provided. Please bring water to drink and wear closed-toe shoes.

Note: this activity has a height requirement; Girls must be 50 inches tall to participate. Meet at the public beach on Yankee Road (follow beach signs in the park). This event is for girls only, adults may watch.


ARCHERY

SAT, SEPT 11 | 12:30 PM | BROWNIES AND OLDER | PUBLIC BEACH, YANKEE ROAD

HIKE WITH A NATURALIST

SAT, SEPT 11 | 2 PM AND 6 PM | ALL AGES | COWAN NATURE CENTER

Hiking is one of the fastest growing outdoor activities in America. It’s the best way to explore your surroundings and see the great outdoors no matter where you are!  Grab your hiking shoes and come join us!

See live raptors (Red Tail Hawk, Barn Owl, and Kestrel) up close and learn about the diurnal and nocturnal birds of prey that make Cowan Lake their home.
