Troop 11436 looked to the skies when considering their Bronze Award project. At Independence Dam State Park, the troop met with the park manager, who shared photos and local nest locations of bald eagles. The girls began their mission to enhance the eagle observation area.
With a focus on educational signage, benches, and a picnic table, the friends began planning. After researching bald eagle facts, the troop designed easy to read signage with illustrations to educate park visitors on the incredible birds, which were printed in partnership with a nearby company. A local sawmill assisted the friends in the creation of two live edge benches the length of an eagle’s wingspan from a single log. A picnic table, which sits inside of a six-foot stone circle, shows visitors the immense size of an eagle’s nest. The troop also designed and added a tabletop with eagle photos and a custom map with locations of nearby nests.
After months of work, which included receiving state approval for their plans, the troop held a workday to prepare the area, and place signs, as well as install benches and the picnic table. Their Bronze Award project now helps educate park visitors while protecting and celebrating Ohio’s bald eagle population. Great work on this impressive Bronze Award, Girl Scouts!
